The Gathering DVD
By City of Melville, Western Australia
The Gathering looks at a group of friends who organise a party whilst their parents are away, and highlights the potentially devastating consequences of excessive alcohol consumption.
The DVD explores the impact of common social and cultural norms around alcohol use, including the impact of popular culture on health behaviours and sexual health, and the communication skills required to manage group dynamics such as negotiation, decision making, assertiveness and supporting others.
The DVD demonstrates ways to prevent and minimise alcohol-related harm, and assists in making the decision not to drink easier. It can also be used to facilitate discussion with the community to discourage secondary supply of alcohol to minors. Teachers' resource material, including interactive student activities and assessments accompany the DVD.
The language and themes in this DVD are explicit; they may offend some students. Teachers are advised to preview The gathering to evaluate its appropriateness for their students, and may also need to warn students in advance of the strong language and adult themes featured.
